Message from the Chair


I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to Howard University and the Department of Chemical Engineering in the College of Engineering and Architecture (CEA).

Chemical engineering deals primarily with the many aspects of processes in which material and energy inputs are converted into value-added products through chemical, physical and biological transformations. The applications are based on the concepts of chemistry, physics, biology and mathematics, guided by the principles of economics, environmental protection, and societal benefits. Chemical engineers are creative and critical thinkers with well-developed and versatile problem-solving skills. Working in consultation with inter- and multi-disciplinary teams of professionals, chemical engineers define problems, determine objectives, plan and conduct research, and then design, develop, and implement computerized and controlled processes for product manufacturing. Chemical engineering is a versatile discipline which adapts to the changing needs of society, also referred to as universal engineering.

The Department of Chemical Engineering at Howard University was established in 1969 with the appointment of a chair and the admission of five students to the program. Since then, the department has grown to include seven regular faculty with around 125 undergraduate students and ten graduate students. Over the years, the department has produced many outstanding graduates who have gone on to successful and exemplary careers in industry, academia and government. Our students have also gone on to distinguished careers in other professions including medicine, law, finance and management. Chemical engineering graduates have many opportunities available in science, engineering, technology, medicine, business and government.

Associate Professor Preethi Chandran Partners with Heart of Tabitha Foundation on STEM and College Readiness Workshop

The Heart of Tabitha Foundation partnered with Howard University Chemical Engineering Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies Preethi Chandran, Ph.D., and Catholic University Biomedical Engineering Associate Professor Otto Wilson, Ph.D., to continue offering its annual summer workshop for local high school students in a virtual setting. Assistant Professor Solmaz Tabtabaei Receives $450K USDA Grant to Research 3D Food Printing for Plant Proteins
