2016 AIChE Annual Student Conference in San Francisco

One Senior and six juniors chemical engineering students respectively participated in the 2016 AIChE Annual Student Conference in San Francisco, CA, November 14-18, 2016. The­ students were Simone Stanley, April Howard, Anayia Reliford, Mahtab Waseem, Bekuechukwu Uzondu, Diwash Bajracharya and Okeoghene Osevwe.

Simone Stanley (Senior Chemical Engineering student) won first place for her presentation of “An Experiment Based Smartphone Education App for a Simple Introduction to Chemical Engineering Kinetics” in the General Engineering and Engineering Education session of the poster competition.

Mahtab Waseem (Junior Chemical Engineering student) received a research travel award to attend the North Central Branch ASM 2016 Meeting. The 76th annual meeting of the NCB-ASM was held at Iowa State University on October 21-22, 2016. Mahtab won second place of the student competition for her “[Investigation of] the Potency and Biofilm Activity of Potential PTS Modulating Compounds.”

Theodore Boyomo, a Howard BSChE graduate (August 2014), successfully completed all requirements for his MSChE degree under the direction of Assistant Professor, Dr. Preethi Chandran. The title of his MS thesis is, “Effect of Chondroitin Sulphate on Aggrecan-Aggrecan Interactions in Cartilage.”

Dr. John Tharakan, Professor, Chemical Engineering presented invited talks on “Service Learning for Community Engagement, Knowledge and Technology Transfer, Capacity Building and Sustainable Development,” at the 3rd International Conference on Transformations in Engineering Education (ICTIEE 2017), Jan 6 – 8 (Hyderabad), Jan 9 – 10 (Rajkot) and Jan 11 – 13 (Jaipur) India, 2017

Dr. Ramesh Chawla, Professor and Chair of Chemical Engineering serves on the National Advisory Council for Environmental Policy and Technology (NACEPT) for USEPA. The Council’s 2016 report, “NACEPT 2016 Report: Environmental Protection Belongs to the Public, A Vision for Citizen Science at EPA,” was submitted to the EPA Administrator on December 13, 2016 (https://www.epa.gov/faca/nacept-2016-report-environmental-protection-bel...).

Professor Dr. Ramesh Chawla Invited to Serve on EPA's National Advisory Council

Dr. Ramesh Chawlaof the College of Engineering and Architecture's Chemical Engineering Department has been invited to serve on the U.S Environmental Protection Agency's National Advisory Council for Environmental Policy and Technology for a two-year term.
